People choosing a dentist search for one near where they live, work or drop the kids at school. That makes local SEO for dentists the highest-value marketing channel for a suburban practice, and the one where a well-run clinic can genuinely outrank much larger competitors.
Here’s what actually moves the needle on suburb-level rankings, in the order we’d work through it.
What “ranking in your suburb” actually means
When someone searches “dentist Marrickville” or “dentist near me”, Google shows two separate things:
- The map pack: the three business listings with a map, pulled from Google Business Profile. This is where the majority of clicks and phone calls happen on mobile.
- The organic results: the standard blue links below, driven by your website.
They’re ranked by different systems, and the levers aren’t the same. A practice with a beautifully written website and a neglected Business Profile will lose the map pack every time.
Step 1: Get your Google Business Profile right
Before touching your website, work through your profile:
- Primary category: set it to “Dentist”. Add secondary categories only where they reflect real services: “Cosmetic Dentist”, “Dental Implants Periodontist”, “Emergency Dental Service”.
- Name, address, phone: exactly as they appear in your website footer. No keyword stuffing in the business name, as Google suspends profiles for it.
- Hours: including public holidays and Saturday sessions. Wrong hours lose bookings.
- Services: list each treatment individually with a short description. Most practices leave this blank.
- Photos: real photos of the exterior, reception, surgeries and team. The exterior shot matters more than people expect, because patients use it to find the door.
Our Google Business Profile optimisation checklist covers this in depth.
Step 2: Understand the proximity problem
Distance from the searcher is one of the strongest map pack ranking factors, and the one you can’t change. A practice in Chatswood will struggle to appear for someone searching from Bondi, no matter how good the SEO. Practically:
- Your realistic catchment is the suburbs within a 10 to 15 minute drive, plus wherever your patients commute from.
- List those suburbs. That list is your local SEO target, not “Sydney” as a whole.
- Organic results are far less distance-bound, so suburb-focused website pages are how you reach further out.
Step 3: Build suburb pages that are actually useful
A page for each key suburb can rank organically, but only if it earns its place. Thin pages that swap one suburb name for another get filtered out, and they read poorly to patients. A suburb page worth publishing includes:
- Genuine local detail: parking, public transport, nearby landmarks, which of your dentists work which days.
- Services relevant to that area: a page for a suburb full of young families should lead with children’s dentistry, not veneers.
- Travel context: how long it takes to get to you, and from where.
- A clear next step: phone number, online booking, and your opening hours.
Write one properly before you write ten. If you can’t say something specific and true about a suburb, don’t build the page.

Your name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere they appear online. Inconsistencies such as an old suite number, a disconnected landline or a previous practice name dilute the signals Google uses to trust your location. Work through the Australian directories that matter: Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, True Local, Yellow Pages, Hotfrog, Health Engine and the Australian Dental Association listings. Correct anything wrong, and delete duplicates.
Step 5: Reviews, done compliantly
Review count, recency and rating all correlate with map pack performance. Asking patients for reviews is acceptable, but as a registered health service you cannot use patient testimonials to advertise your practice. Reviews patients leave on your listing are fine; republishing them on your website or in ads as promotional content is not. A safe, effective process:
- Ask at the end of the appointment, in person, once.
- Follow up with a single SMS containing a direct review link.
- Never offer an incentive of any kind.
- Respond to every review: briefly, and to criticism calmly, without discussing clinical details or confirming the person is a patient.
Step 6: Get the on-site technical basics right
None of the above works if the website underneath is weak. The essentials:
- Your suburb and service in the page titles of your home page and key service pages.
- Address and phone in the footer of every page, as text rather than an image.
- Dentist or LocalBusiness schema markup with your address, hours and phone.
- An embedded Google map on your contact page, and a tappable phone number in the header.
- Fast loading on mobile, since most “near me” searches happen on a phone, often while the person is in pain.
Step 7: Measure the right things
Rankings move by location, so a single “position 3” figure means little. Track instead: calls and direction requests from your Business Profile insights, organic sessions to your suburb and service pages, and new patient enquiries. Most importantly, ask every new patient how they found you.
Give it three to six months before judging results. Local SEO compounds; it rarely spikes.

Frequently asked questions
How long does local SEO take to work for a dental practice?
Business Profile improvements can show up within a few weeks, particularly for categories, services and photos. Organic suburb pages usually take three to six months to settle into stable positions, and competitive metropolitan areas can take longer.
Can I rank in a suburb where I don’t have a practice?
Not in the map pack. That requires a real, staffed location at a verifiable address. You can rank organically in neighbouring suburbs with a genuinely useful suburb page, which is why the organic results matter as much as the map.
Are Google reviews allowed under AHPRA advertising rules?
Patients may leave reviews on third-party platforms, and you are not required to remove them. What you cannot do is use testimonials about clinical care to advertise your practice, so avoid republishing patient reviews on your website or in paid ads. Our plain-English guide to the AHPRA advertising guidelines covers the detail.
How many suburb pages should we build?
Start with three to five suburbs that reflect where your patients genuinely come from, and write each one properly. Practices that publish thirty near-identical pages usually see none of them rank.
Do we still need local SEO if we run Google Ads?
Ads stop the day you stop paying, while local rankings persist. Most practices run both, using ads for immediate enquiries and local SEO to reduce their reliance on paid traffic over time.
